How we calculate our Rates
Bottom line: We use an annual survey to calculate an appropriate average based on our location, firm size, year of call and practice areas.
Each spring the Canadian Lawyers Magazine releases a Legal Fees Survey which compiles information from across the country about legal billing practices.
We use the most comparable information to help us set our Rates for the year.
Hourly Rate
Here is an excerpt of the 2019 Hourly Rates we used to calculate our 2020 Hourly Rate:
Lawyers who had been called to the bar for one year or less and…
Worked at a firm with between 1 and 4 lawyers: $212.87
Practiced in Western Canada: $196.57
Practiced in the areas we practiced in: $186.15 to $213.17
Based on that information we decided that $200 was an appropriate and fair hourly rate.
Flat Fees
The Legal Fees Survey also lists average flat fees for a variety of discrete services. We used that information to set the basis of our flat fees.
